Every Arabic letter has a makhraj, the place in the mouth or throat where its sound originates. The five main regions are the throat, the tongue, the lips, the nasal cavity and the empty space in the mouth. Correct makhraj is the first step of tajweed: two letters that differ only by makhraj change meaning if confused, such as qalqalah letters versus soft letters.
